General information

Krāslava District was formed in 1949. It comprises Krāslava District, Dagda Town and 23 rural municipalities: Andrupene, Andzeļi, Asūne, Auleja, Bērziņi, Dagda, Ezernieki, Grāveri, Indra, Izvalta, Kalnieši, Kaplava, Kastuļina, Kombuļi, Konstantinova, Ķepova, Piedruja, Robežnieki, Skaista, Svariņi, Šķaune, Šķeltova and Ūdrīši parishes.
Krāslava Town is the administrative centre of the district. The area of the district is 2,288 sq. km, of which 30 percent are covered by forests.
Total number of inhabitants: 34,573.
Representation of nationalities: Latvians 48.7%, Russians 24.7%, Byelorussians 17.0%,individuals of other nationalities 9,6%.
Density of population: 15,1 residents per 1 sq. km.
Daugava, the largest river in Latvia spans Krāslava District. Most of the district, except for Kaplava Parish, is situated on the right bank of the Daugava River. Dubna is the second largest junction basin of rivers.
There are 273 lakes in the district. The lakes cover 5 percent of its territory, making it one of the most densely covered regions in Latvia. Krāslava District is often called as ‘the land of the blue lakes’.
Public transport: taking into consideration a long distance between Riga and Kraslava district, the district is easily accessible by the A6 transit motorway Riga –Vitebsk.
