Krāslava District is located in Latgale Region, in the south-eastern part of Latvia, at a distance of 267 km from Riga, and 40 km from Daugavpils.

Krāslava District is situated in the borderland, and it has common borders with Daugavpils District (Saliena, Biķernieki, Ambeļi parishes), Preiļi District (Aglona parish), Rēzekne District (Feimaņi, Puša, Mākoņkalns, Kaunata parishes), Ludza District (Rundēni, Istra, Pasiene parishes). In the south-eastern part it has an external border with Vitebsk Region of Byelorussia.
